Duality seems to be a common theme for a lot of movies nowadays. The double lifestyle is appealing to people because, in a sense, we all do it. We may be one person at work and another when we're with friends, and that may even change depending on the group of friends. I don't care how real you keep it...almost nobody talks to the police like they talk to a peer, unless, of course, they're high or the like being tazed and maced.
Moving right along, Mr. Brooks was waaaay more on point than I expected. It was very dark, much darker than American Psycho, another movie of this sort. Kevin Costner is a seemingly normal, upper-class, white male with a wife and daughter. It is revealed within the first few scenes and the previews that he's a serial killer.
The thing that sets this movie apart from American Psycho is that you can actually see the voice telling Mr. Brooks what to do. I believe he's afflicted with schizophrenia in the movie (please correct me if I'm wrong and you've seen it). The acting was good and toeing the line of great...I'd say it was good acting for 70% of the movie and great for the other 30% during key scenes. There wasn't a moment I was actually in the loop of the plot. The twists were timed well and left me wondering "How did I miss that?" The cinematography and effects were second-to-none as well as the sequences with Kevin Costner and the voice in his head.
In short, if you have 6, 10, or 15 bucks, however much a movie is where you live, check this out soon!
